Public Gifts to the President
Public gifts provide a unique insight into any presidential administration. All gifts sent to the president and first lady cycle through the White House Gift Unit. Most gifts are eventually transferred to the National Archives, where they become part of the collection of that president’s future library and museum. President Gerald R. Ford and First Lady Betty Ford received thousands of gifts from admirers and organizations. The gifts often reflect the interests of the two and/or the admiration expressed by the donor. For instance, President Ford received many signed footballs and other sports memorabilia while others sent Mrs. Ford Equal Rights Amendment emblazoned material or “First Mama” objects related to the CB culture of the time. The collections include plaques, trophies, and other presentation pieces given to them by many different organizations. These varied artifacts provide us a glimpse into how the public perceived President and Mrs. Ford during the 1970s.
