Transcript of Film in "The Watergate Trial" Section

June 17th, 1972.

Over the weekend 5 men were nabbed in the Democratic National Headquarters here in Washington , seemingly preparing to tap or bug the place. Once through the doors, the intruders gained entrance to committee offices where files were ransacked and papers removed. The five suspects, armed with photographic devices, were apprehended by police….

And it turns out that one of them has an office in the headquarters of the Committee for the Reelection of the President. The same man holds a contract to provide security services to the Republican National Committee.

This crime has little apparent effect on the election results of 1972. Richard Nixon is reelected by a landslide margin. One of those convicted in the break in, James McCord, Jr., reveals to a Grand Jury, detailed and incriminating information about the activities of the Committee to Reelect the President.
