Series
This series consists of examples of cards and letters that were sent to the general public in response to their mail to President Gerald Ford and First Lady Betty Ford. Topics include Betty Ford’s 60 Minutes interview, breast cancer surgery, participation in citizens band (CB) radio, prayer for Dr. Maurice Sage, and the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). Included are sample greetings for special occasions such as a milestone birthday, anniversary, birth, first communion, graduation, confirmation, illness, wedding, Eagle Scout award, and sympathy for a loss. The examples also include notes of appreciation, including after President Ford’s loss in the 1976 presidential election.
The signatures on the responses were auto-penned or pre-printed. In 1975, those seeking information on how to make Christmas decorations were sent a color brochure entitled, “A White House Christmas,” that contained instructions on making ornaments. “Paw-tograph” requesters were sent a form letter from Susan Ford and a photograph of “Liberty” with a stamped paw print.
